Drivers – Slow down to 40 when bus lights flash

Lights flash on the back of buses to:
A) Warn drivers the bus is picking up or setting down children
B) Warn drivers the speed limit is 40km/h when passing the bus (unless a lower speed limit applies)
C) Both

Unless a lower speed limit applies, by law motorists must slow down to 40km/h when bus lights flash, as this means the bus is picking up or dropping off school children who may be crossing or about to cross the road. #BeBusAware |

| Bus passengers – Vulnerable passenger safety |
If you're older, pregnant or have a mobility impairment, here are some tips to help you stay safe on the bus:
✅ Ask the driver to lower the bus if possible, to make it easier to get on and off
✅ Hold onto the railing to get on the bus.
✅ Take a seat close to the front of the bus
✅ Press the stop button early to give the driver time to stop safely
✅ Wait for the bus to stop before standing up
✅ If you stand, hold on at all times. |

Be aware of blind spots at the front, back and sides of a bus. Don’t step in front of a bus and take care if travelling in a bus’s blind spot. Between 2020 and 2024, 10 people were killed and 26 were seriously injured from crashes involving a turning bus. |
