Plans & strategies

It's clear that road safety actions over decades have saved thousands of lives. Strategic planning and delivery help set clear targets to ensure we reach our goal of zero deaths and serious injuries on NSW roads.

Plans & strategies

All levels of government recognise that too many lives are lost on Australia’s roads. But as owners of extensive local road networks, councils have a unique role to play in reaching our target of zero deaths and serious injuries by 2050.

It’s clear that road safety actions over the past few decades have saved thousands of lives. It’s also clear that strategic planning that sets measurable targets – and actions to achieve them – can make a tangible difference and protect road users.

The plans and guidance below set out local, NSW and national priorities to help councils make local roads safer. Examples of Road Safety Strategic Plans from regional and metropolitan local government areas (LGAs) can serve as inspiration to develop your council plan.

Some local councils have implemented or are in the process of implementing Council Road Safety Strategic Plans that align with state and national priorities. Plans can be even more effective when embedded in larger community planning initiatives and strategies and are related to delivery and operational plans for these strategies. They are also specific; maintaining a focus on issues relevant to each LGA and its community.
