Each Australian state and territory government has an appointed agency responsible for managing road safety in their respective jurisdictions. Information on road safety research and developments across our states and territories can be used as references to inspire new road safety improvements in NSW.
These organisations work with all levels of governments to nationally coordinate the regulation of transport, roads and road safety initiatives. They also provide advice and support to drive improved initiatives and national reform.
Australasian College of Road Safety (ACRS)
The peak membership association in Australia and New Zealand for road safety practitioners, advocates and members of the public working to eliminating deaths and injuries on the roads.
- Operates a Local Government Network (LGN) for ACRS members who wish to focus on road safety at the local government level.
- Holds the annual Australasian Road Safety Conference where road safety and injury prevention researchers, practitioners and policy makers come together to facilitate collaboration and share information.
- Journal of Road Safety – an international, scholarly, cross-disciplinary, peer-reviewed, and open-access journal focused on road safety.
Austroads
Association of the Australian and New Zealand transport agencies, representing all levels of government. Austroads provides advice and research to inform the development of government road safety laws, policies and initiatives. The site provides freely accessible research papers on a wide range of road safety topics.
Construction Logistics and Community Safety – Australia (CLOCS-A)
National approach for managing the risks around construction projects.
Infrastructure and Transport Ministers’ Meetings (ITMM)
Intergovernmental meeting of infrastructure and transport ministers from across Australia. Facilitates work between all levels of government to enable better national cooperation and consistency on transport and infrastructure matters and initiatives.
National Transport Commission (NTC)
Intergovernmental organisation leading land transport reform projects to improve safety, productivity and environmental outcomes. Reports to ITMM and oversees work to reform the Heavy Vehicle National Law (HVNL), regulatory framework for the use of automated vehicles and Australian Road Rules amendments.
National Heavy Vehicle Regulator (NHVR)
Australian regulator of heavy vehicles (trucks and buses). Administers the Heavy Vehicle National Law which applies in all states and territories (except WA & NT). Oversees projects and initiatives to improve safety and efficiency among heavy vehicle manufacturers and operators.
National Road Safety Partnership Program (NRSPP)
Operates as a collaborative network to support Australian businesses in developing a positive road safety culture.
International road safety organisations and government agencies in other countries whose policies and initiatives may provide ideas for the future road safety improvement within NSW.
European Transport Safety Council (ETSC)
A Brussels-based, independent non-profit organisation established to reduce death and trauma on transport networks in Europe. Advises the European Commission, European Parliament and national governments on transport safety matters. Conducts research to inform its advice. Global Alliance of NGOs for Road Safety (the Alliance)
Collection of non-government organisations (NGOs) that implement programs and lobby for road safety initiatives around the world. Five Australian organisations are members of the Alliance.
Global Road Safety Partnership (GRSP)
Non-profit organisation which creates and supports multi-sector road safety partnerships with front-line agencies and organisations around the world. Provides advice, advocacy and helps connect road safety practitioners to share knowledge and increase international collaboration.
National Highway Traffic Safety Administration
Agency responsible for improving road safety and enforcing performance standards in the United States of America.
NZ Transport Agency
Government authority responsible for improving road user safety in New Zealand.
Department of Transport (UK)
The Think! campaign website hosts the Department of Transport’s (UK) road safety information.
