The Used Car Safety Ratings provide an easy-to-follow guide for people looking to purchase a used vehicle. The ratings provide a score on ‘Overall Safety’, which is broken down into three separate components:

  • Driver Safety - how well the vehicle protects its driver from being killed or seriously injured in a crash.
  • Other Road User Safety - how well the vehicle protects other drivers, pedestrians, bicycle riders and motorcyclists from being killed or seriously injured in a crash.
  • Crash Avoidance – how well the vehicle’s key crash avoidance technologies reduce the likelihood of being involved in a crash.

All types of vehicles are rated, from light cars to medium SUVs, people movers, commercial vans and even commercial utes.

Access to safer vehicles is important to all road users, but especially younger and older drivers. Data shows that drivers aged up to 25 years and older than 70 years are more likely to be driving an older car when involved in a crash, compared to drivers aged 26 to 69.

This is also true for those who drive in regional areas, where road conditions can vary significantly. Having a vehicle equipped with key safety features such as lane departure warnings, Electronic Stability Control (ESC) and Autonomous Emergency Breaking (AEB) can protect and help avoid crashes.
