Celebrating the Zero Emission Buses Program on World Sustainable Transport Day

Wednesday 26 November 2025 is World Sustainable Transport Day and we are using the opportunity to shine a light on the government’s Zero Emission Buses (ZEB) program, a multi-billion dollar program to transition the State’s 8,000 plus diesel and natural gas public transport buses to zero emissions technology.

The first stage of the transition commenced in 2023 and will see 1,200 new electric buses introduced for Greater Sydney customers by 2028.

The benefits of electric buses include lower emissions, greater comfort for passengers and quieter communities.

As part of the first stage, 11 existing bus depots will also be converted to support the new battery electric fleet and a new battery electric bus depot will be built in Macquarie Park.

In addition, Transport is also working closely with regional bus operators to undertake a series of zero emission bus trials in regional NSW. Different types of ZEBs are being trialled in Armidale, the Tweed, Narrabri, Queanbeyan, and Deniliquin. These locations have been selected for their varied climates, terrain, and road conditions and trial results are helping shape a reduced emissions future for bus transport in regional communities.

Please remember Zero Emission Buses can be much quieter than traditional buses, so remember to always stay alert when walking around buses and traffic. Put your phone or headphones away and always cross the road at a safe place, including zebra crossing or traffic lights. If these aren’t available, cross the road somewhere which has a good line of sight in both directions and look left and right continuously as you cross.
