With the launch of our new interactive map of AusRAP star ratings for state and regional roads, New South Wales is now the most transparent and collaborative state in Australia when it comes to sharing road safety data.
We’ve released a new easy to navigate map of the NSW AusRAP (Australian Road Assessment Program) star ratings for our state and regional roads, with the data showing that more than 71% of travel takes place on roads with a 3-star or higher rating.
AusRAP aims to improve road safety across Australia by assessing road conditions that influence crash risk and assigning safety star ratings. Roads are rated from 1-star (least safety features) to 5-star (most safety features) based on a broad range of road information, including current infrastructure (for example barriers, rumble strips), speed limit, traffic volume, road markings, roadside hazards, pedestrian crossings and cycling infrastructure to name a few. This information is then combined with data on where most people travel and where crashes occur to help highlight high-risk sections of roads and identify where safety improvements could make the greatest impact on road trauma.
Local councils can use the AusRAP map and webpage information to:
✔️ Identify high-risk roads – Councils can view star ratings for roads in their areas, pinpointing locations that may require safety improvements.
✔️ Support road safety planning – The ratings can be used to advocate for infrastructure changes and support road safety projects.
✔️ Promote road safety – Councils can share the map with local communities to raise awareness of the safety features of their roads and any ongoing improvement initiatives.
Visit the Centre for Road Safety website to explore the map, access the star ratings, and learn more about how this initiative fits into broader road safety efforts.
By using this tool, councils can contribute to creating safer roads and promoting road safety education in their communities. Together, we can work towards reducing road trauma and building safer, more sustainable road networks across New South Wales.
