Our 2026 Road Safety Action Plan has activities to address this over-representation. Community engagement and educational programs for disadvantaged communities helps to raise awareness and understanding of road safety and the road rules.
Collaboration is key! Our approach includes a range of perspectives, skills and community engagement capabilities to improve Aboriginal road safety in NSW.
Our collaborative activities include:
- Community information days for disadvantaged families to use, install and access correct child car seats.
- Developing community advocates for road safety through a funding partnership with the AFL NSW/ACT Aboriginal Youth Leadership program.
- Helmet exchange - swapping an old helmet for a new helmet instead of getting a fine.
- Bicycle and scooter safety engagement to provide awareness and education.
- Community activations at local events such as the NSW Koori Knockout Rugby League competition, NAIDOC Week and Yabun festival.
- Community Road Safety Grants available to community groups and charity/not-for-profit organisations to improve road safety in their local community.
- Support to access driver licence education, supervision and mentorship.
- Promotion of road safety through sport as an incentive to target a community of interest.
We all have a role to play! Here are some practical steps that you can take to make sure you and others stay safe on our roads:
- Put the mobile phone away somewhere it can't be used or seen.
- Keep to the speed limit and drive to the conditions.
- Have a Plan B to get home safely.
- Be well rested and avoid driving tired.
