We are marking more informal rest areas with green reflectors to support heavy vehicle drivers identify safe opportunities to stop, park, rest and conduct safety checks on their loads.
Green reflectors mounted on roadside guideposts are used as a simple, cost-effective way of identifying suitable informal heavy vehicle rest areas.
These sites are an important part of the overall rest area network, providing more identifiable, safe rest stopping options for truckies to manage fatigue when travelling on regional roads. The reflector system is particularly beneficial at night.
Green reflectors are placed in a vertical row on the guidepost, below the existing red reflector. These are installed in a 3, 2, 1 pattern progressively leading to the entrance of the site, specifically:
- three reflectors are positioned 400-500 metres out
- two reflectors at 200-250 metres
- a single reflector marks the entrance to the informal rest area.
In order for a green reflector site to be marked it must meet standards for size, sight distance, surface quality, access, environmental factors and surrounding site conditions.
This is part of work underway at Transport to improve the quantity and quality of heavy vehicle rest areas in NSW in collaboration with the road freight industry.
