Over 40 Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander boys were part of the second AFL NSW/ACT Indigenous Youth Leadership Program session for 2023.
Errol Gulden from the Sydney Swans has joined the program as a new ambassador. He’ll play an active role in helping promote the importance of road safety. Errol has long looked up to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander players in the game and has accepted the opportunity to work with young leaders in the football community with open arms.
The session highlighted the devastating effects of road trauma and encouraged the boys to take a leading role in their community to help spread the road safety message and to help move towards zero road trauma by 2050.
The boys engaged in an activity that includes hearing Tahlia’s story. Tahlia was 16 years old when she lost her best friend Tegan and was seriously injured herself needing 25 surgeries after getting in a car on New Year’s Eve where the driver was speeding and crashed.
The program has been running for over a decade and is a great way to engage youth in road safety awareness through footy and leadership. The next Indigenous Youth Leadership Camp will be held 25th – 27th September during the school holidays.
It’s worth contacting road safety communities, institutions, businesses, organisations and advocates in your local government area to collaborate together and deliver road safety actions and initiatives.
