We’re extending the demerit point trial for a second year to incentivise motorists to adopt safe driving behaviours on NSW roads.
All unrestricted NSW licence holders – including professional drivers – are eligible for the trial. If an eligible driver has an offence-free record during the trial period, one demerit point will be removed from their driving record.
The trial runs from 17 January 2024 until 16 January 2025. There’s no need to register for the trial as all unrestricted licence holders are automatically included.
At the end of the trial, those eligible will be identified to have a demerit point deducted. Processing will start mid-April 2025 and take about six months to complete.
Learner and provisional licence holders aren’t included in the trial as they’re subject to the conditions of the Graduated Licensing Scheme.
Safe driving behaviour can’t be underestimated as we work together to create a safer driving environment for all road users and ultimately lower road trauma to zero.
More information on the trial can be found on the NSW Road Safety website.
Did you know?
All licence holders start with zero demerit points. When a licence holder commits an offence with a demerit point penalty, points are added to their driving record.
Demerit points stay active for three years from the date of the offence.
